In the early seventies, Marcel Adams, a local and prosperous businessman, had a vision: to acquire an immense (11-million square feet) property on which he would build a major shopping centre right in the heart of Quebec City, in an almost deserted and undeveloped area.
At the time, many people did not believe in the potential of this major investment. Yet in August 1981, after several years of developing his project, Mr. Adams realized his dream. His vision has truly come to life—over the years, Les Galeries de la Capitale has become the most popular shopping centre in Quebec City and an unprecedented economic engine for the area.
The Les Galeries de la Capitale project was initiated by Les Développements Iberville Inc., owned by Marcel Adams, with partners the Eaton Properties, an affiliate of the Eaton stores (25%) and Markborough Properties, a real estate affiliate of the Hudson’s Bay Company (25%). Over the years, there have been many developments at Les Galeries de la Capitale, including the May 1988 construction of the Méga Parc, the second largest indoor amusement park in North America.
The objective of this addition was to attract young families, to entertain and amuse them at reasonable prices, and to provide them with opportunities to shop. It was typical of the Les Galeries de la Capitale project: a great idea put the centre’s name on the map by offering a winning combination of shopping and entertainment, not only for the entire family but for seniors and tourists as well. Other development projects also included the addition of many major freestanding retailers, such as Future Shop, Rona, Sears Décor, Archambault, Pier I Imports, DeSerres and Le Cochon Dingue restaurant.
On December 1, 2005, Les Galeries de la Capitale was bought by the Canada Pension Plan Funds (80%), Osmington (10%) and Westerkirk (10%). The management mandate was then given to Redcliff Realty Management, a company that has brought many new development strategies to the centre, including the addition of three major retailers: Toys ‘’R’’ Us, Best Buy and Sports Experts/Atmosphère (spring 2011). In October 2011, Coril Group of Companies acquired and merged Redcliff Realty Group with Tonko Realty Advisors Ltd., positioning the new organization as Canada’s largest independent commercial real estate advisory company. The Les Galeries de La Capitale project benefits from a seemingly endless supply of great new ideas—it goes without saying that the best is yet to come.
About 30 years after Marcel Adams’ vision first came to life, Les Galeries de la Capitale is the largest commercial complex in Eastern Canada, with a surface area of almost 2 millions square feet. The centre has 280 stores, including Simons, Sears, The Bay, Zellers, The Gap, Renaud-Bray, Sports Experts and Future Shop, as well as 35 restaurants, 20 attractions in the Méga Parc and the largest IMAX screen in the country.
Built on great ideas over the last 30 years, Les Galeries de la Capitale is Quebec’s ultimate shopping and entertainment destination.
